On 24th April 2024, the AMPP India Chapter and AMPP India West Zone Student Chapter, Department of Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, India celebrated the International Corrosion Awareness Day at the Department of Metallurgical Engineering & Materials Science, IIT Bombay. To spread corrosion awareness amongst the budding minds of the student community, the event started with ‘Corrosion Awareness Quiz’ with five teams participating from Swami Vivekanand Junior College, Wilson College, St. Andrews College, Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School and Delhi Public School. A range of questions covering the basics of corrosion, corrosion issues in everyday life and methods of preventing them, electrochemistry behind corrosion, etc. The contest was fierce and lively with both the students and the audience thoroughly enjoying the Quiz. The team from Wilson College (Mr. Awwab Wadekar and Ms. Siddhi Rai) emerged winners while both Swami Vivekanand Junior College (Ms. Pratima Tawde and Mr. Siddharth Talreja) and Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School (Mr. Aaron Davis and Mr. Divij Butte) finished runners-up.
Glimpses of the Corrosion Quiz Event
The Corrosion Awareness function was graced by the presence of former and current AMPP India Chapter officers, the student community of IIT Bombay, faculty and staff of IIT Bombay and the participants of the student quiz contest. Dr. M. Patri, Dr. Raja Ramana Fellow and former Director of the Naval Materials Research Laboratory (NMRL), Mumbai was the chief guest for the occasion. Mr. Sumeet Kataria, Secretary of the AMPP India Chapter started with a short introduction about AMPP and its Indian chapter and briefed about its various activities. Mr. Tushar Jhaveri, former President of NACE International then addressed the gathering. Prof. V.S. Raja, Trustee of AMPP India West Zone Student Chapter and Institute Chair Professor, IIT Bombay talked about the genesis of International Corrosion Awareness Day, the Importance of Corrosion Mitigation in Modern Society and exciting corrosion research, and urged the student community to actively take part in the fight against corrosion. An Audio-visual clip containing a message from the current AMPP Chair, Dr. Amir Eliezer was then played for the gathering.
To bring awareness among the student and corrosion professionals, the winners of the AMPP 2023 awards namely, Dr. Supratik Roychowdhury of BARC, Mumbai (AMPP Fellow honor), Mr. Manoj Mishra of AMPP India Chapter (Elaine Bowman Distinguished Service Award), Dr. Samir Degan of Osnar Chemical Pvt. Ltd. (Oliver Moghissi Asset Integrity Management Award) and Dr. Ajay Krishnan M of HPCL Ltd., Bengaluru (Early Career Excellence Award) were felicitated. The winners and runners-up of the corrosion quiz contest were then awarded certificates and cash prizes by the chief guest Dr. Patri. The chief guest delivered a special lecture titled ‘Mitigating Corrosion Issues in the Naval Systems’ and talked about corrosion issues faced by the naval and defense sectors, mitigation methods adopted and the corrosion research areas of NMRL. The memorable evening then concluded with a group photo session followed by high tea.
