Your Members Are Your Best Marketing Team: How to Turn Volunteers into Chapter Ambassadors
July 14, 2026 •Lydia Prazak
You don't need a bigger marketing budget to reach more people. You simply need to make it easy for your members, speakers, and volunteers to help spread the word.
Introduction
Most chapter leaders wear many hats. They're planning events, coordinating volunteers, managing finances—and somewhere along the way they're also expected to market everything.
It can feel like you're doing all the work yourself.
The good news? You probably have dozens—or even hundreds—of people who are willing to help promote your chapter. They just need a simple invitation and the right tools.
This approach is often called employee advocacy in the business world, where companies encourage employees to share company news with their personal networks. For chapters, the same concept works just as well using your volunteers, speakers, sponsors, and members.
Instead of relying on one person to reach everyone, imagine dozens of people helping tell your chapter's story.
Why Member Advocacy Works
Explain that people trust recommendations from people they know more than they trust organizational pages.
When one member shares an event, it reaches:
- Their coworkers
- Former classmates
- Industry connections
- LinkedIn network
- Friends in the profession
Even if each person only reaches a few dozen professionals, the combined impact can be significant.
Key Takeaway: Every member has a network. Together, those networks are far larger than your chapter's social media following.
1. Ask Your Committee Members to Share Every Event
Committee members are already invested in the chapter's success.
Instead of hoping they'll remember to share a post:
Provide:
- A ready-made social media post
- Event graphic
- Registration link
- Suggested hashtags
The easier you make it, the more likely they'll participate.
Quick Tip:
Create one email titled:
"Please Share This Week's Event"
Include everything they need in one place.
2. Give Speakers Ready-to-Use Graphics
Speakers are excited about presenting.
Help them promote the event by sending:
- Speaker announcement graphic
- Event registration link
- Suggested LinkedIn post
- Suggested Facebook post
Many speakers have professional networks your chapter doesn't reach.
3. Encourage Attendees to Post During the Event
One social post during an event can inspire someone to attend the next one.
Ideas:
- Photo booth or chapter banner
- Event hashtag
- QR code linking to your social pages
- Ask attendees to tag the chapter
You can even make an announcement before the presentation begins:
"If you're enjoying today's event, we'd love for you to share a photo and tag our chapter."
4. Feature Your Members
People love sharing posts they're featured in.
Ideas include:
- New member welcomes
- Volunteer spotlights
- Certification congratulations
- Award winners
- Member achievements
- Student scholarships
- Retirements
- Years of service
When people share these posts, they're introducing your chapter to their own network.
5. Create Content That's Easy to Share
Think beyond event flyers.
Create content like:
- Industry tips
- Safety reminders
- Photos from chapter activities
- Community service projects
- Fun facts
- Career advice
- Technical highlights
- Volunteer appreciation
Useful content gets shared more often than promotional content.
6. Thank Members Who Help Promote the Chapter
Recognition encourages continued participation.
Ideas:
- Mention them in meetings
- Feature them in newsletters
- Highlight volunteers on social media
- Give small appreciation gifts
- Celebrate "Chapter Champions"
People are more likely to help again when they feel appreciated.
Keep It Simple
Member advocacy doesn't require complicated software or marketing expertise.
It simply means making it easy for people who already support your chapter to share your message.
Start with one small goal.
Maybe this month it's asking your board members to share one event.
Next month, invite your speaker to post.
Small actions from many people often outperform big efforts from one person.
Final Thoughts
Your chapter's greatest marketing asset isn't your website or your social media account.
It's your people.
Every volunteer, member, speaker, sponsor, and attendee has the ability to introduce your chapter to someone new.
When you give them the tools to do that, your chapter's reach grows naturally—one connection at a time.
