“AMPP matters in my family because we have now made it generational to participate in the local South Texas AMPP Chapter. I have followed in my father's footsteps and am now the AMPP Treasurer. Our local AMPP chapter also provides student scholarships, of which I received one during my university years. AMPP supported my education, and I am now very happy to volunteer and give back to AMPP as well.”

Common Questions About Corrosion, Coatings, and Asset Protection
What is cathodic protection and how does it prevent corrosion?
Cathodic protection is a technique that controls corrosion on a metal surface by making it the cathode of an electrochemical cell, redirecting corrosion away from the protected structure. It's widely used to safeguard pipelines, storage tanks, and marine and buried infrastructure, and is a core focus of AMPP corrosion resources.
What is AC interference on pipelines?
AC interference occurs when pipelines share a right-of-way with high-voltage power lines, inducing alternating current that can accelerate corrosion and create safety risks. Effective mitigation strategies help operators manage induced voltages and protect both pipeline integrity and worker safety.
How is artificial intelligence being used in corrosion control and coatings?
Artificial intelligence is increasingly applied to corrosion control through predictive asset management, automated inspection, defect detection, and data-driven maintenance planning. As adoption grows, closing the gap between AI training and real-world industry needs is becoming essential for the future corrosion and coatings workforce.
What is nondestructive testing (NDT) in corrosion inspection?
Nondestructive testing (NDT) is a set of inspection methods used to evaluate the condition of materials and structures without causing damage. In corrosion control, NDT helps identify leaks, wall loss, coating defects, and hidden degradation across oil and gas, pipeline, and industrial assets.
What are soluble salts and why do they matter before coating?
Soluble salts are surface contaminants — such as chlorides and sulfates — that, if left on a substrate, can cause premature coating failure through blistering and under-film corrosion. Field extraction and analysis methods, defined in AMPP standards, help detect and control salt contamination before protective coatings are applied.
Why does corrosion matter in nuclear power systems?
Corrosion and environmental degradation of materials are critical concerns in nuclear power systems, where component reliability directly affects safety and long-term operation. Understanding how materials degrade under high heat, radiation, and aggressive environments supports the safe extension of plant service life.
What causes protective coatings to fail?
Protective coatings typically fail due to inadequate surface preparation, application errors, environmental exposure, or coating selection that doesn't match service conditions. Studying real-world failures across floors, linings, concrete, and marine environments helps professionals prevent costly rework — the focus of the Coatings Failures | Books Gateway | Association for Materials Protection and Performance.
